What Causes Frequent Nose Bleed For In Children?

My 6 year old son gets several nosebleeds a week. Once he had 3 in one day. He had one last night during the night and today he told me a couple of different time that his head hurt on top, then tonight he said he was cold and he looked pale and said that his head hurt a little on top again. Do I need to take him to a Doctor. Should I be concerned? My dad had a type of leukemia and my mom keeps telling me that he always had nosebleeds, but other people tell me this is common in children.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,
Thanks for posting in HCM.
Bleeding from nose is called as 'Epistaxis' and it generally bleeds from a region called 'little's area' on the mucosal side of the nose.
It may be triggered by infection or mucosal congestion due to cold.
Every time, there is bleeding, you need to pinch the nose for about 2 to 3 min and allow to breath through nose. Ask him to stop nose picking.
If it is happening regularly and more blood is lost everytime, the arteries causing bleed needs to be examined by ENT Surgeon and can be cauterised, which will cure the condition permanently.
