What Causes Frequent Hot Flashes During Menopause?

I am 52 years old, female. Over the last year I have lost 115 pounds through diet and exercise. I am post menopausal, about three years. I am pre-diabetic but my blood sugar is well managed through diet. Recently, for the last couple of months, I have been experiencing frequent hot flashes, as many as three per hour, at various times per day. The hot flashes are followed by feeling chilled with goose bumps. It happens at night as well. I dress in layers, and it seems like it s sweater on sweater off constantly, no matter what temperature it is outside or inside.
