I just found out I have strep throat for the 3rd time since 2013 and my doctor wrote me a prescription for Zythromax because he, for some reason didn t want to prescribe penicillin again. How quickly can I expect relief from this and how effective is it? Is it normal to get strep so often at 40? I had never had this as a child so I am puzzled as to why this is suddenly occurring with such frequency. Thanks
Hi. Thanks for your query. Read and understood your history and concerns related to the recurrent strep throat. 3 attacks in three years can not be said to be recurrent or chronic. This is just an early occurrence due to the exposure to the public. The diagnosis is necessary just to differentiate this from the viral/flu where antibiotics may be hold back. Since this is strep, you ought to take the antibiotics and supportive medicines and you will be fine. The only preventive measure is to keep away from the people or patients to keep away from the people with upper respiratory tract infection symptoms.
