Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, my mother in law is 98 years old and exceptionally healthy. She is still very active and returned from a holiday with friends yesterday, it was a 5 hour drive by car. Last night she started vomitting a very black ink like substance and this morning is very weak and cannot hold any food down. What could this be?
the vomitiing of blackish coloured vomittus is very ominus sign & its the emergency. You have to rush for ER.
Firstly check with her whether she has ingested blackish coloured food before she had vomitting ??
if the answer to above question is no then you must rush to ER as the blackish colioured vomitus indicates bleeding inside stomach which is an emergency and may endager life if the bleeding continues.
Try to give her cold things such as cold water or cold milk if she can withhold if she is not able to do so then dont give anything as there are chances of aspiration.
Admit her in hopital which may prompt you to further testings such as prothrombin time & INR testing & if needed OGD scopy. Do not take this event lightly.
