What Causes Fluctuating Thyroid Level When Diagnosed With Graves Disease?

I am 53 and was diagnosed with Graves Disease at age 40. Took radioactive medicine to "kill" my thyroid. Thyroad dosage worked for quite awhile but recently has been fluctuating. I had my thyroid checked 2 months ago and it was too high so the Dr. lowered my dosage of Levothyroxine from 1.50 to 1.25. Had it checked again this week and the number was 0.151 so dosage is getting lowered to 112. The Dr. office said my thyroid is underactive so why are they lowering the dosage? Does underactive mean I am hypothyroid because I am so tired all the time. Will this lower dosage made me even more hypo and tired? It is so confusing. Thank you.

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,
I have gone carefully through your concern and understood your query.
After the radioactive iodine treatment the thyroid function is lost, it means that it is underactive.
Levothyroxine is a hormone replacement therapy and is used to substitute the thyroid function.
Low TSH level means over dosage of levothyroxine or hyperthyroidism, so you have to lower the dose in order to keep hormonal balance.
After each dose changes, you should check the TSH level 6 weeks later.
Hope the information will help.
Best wishes,
Dr.Mirjeta
