Hello there, My 3 year old daughter has a black spot on her tongue. What could it be? She has had a fever, cough, flu for the past days. She s on medication but don t know if this is the reason. I tried to brush it off with her toothbrush but it didn t go away. She s been sick since Saturday.

Pediatrician 's  Response
The black spot could have been present from birth. In that case it would not probably be a cause to worry about. Observe if it is constantly there. It is likely to be unrelated to the cough and flu. Most often such symptoms are due to respiratory tract infections and are caused due to certain viruses. Irrespective of use of medications, such episodes take 5-7 days to recover. If the child is otherwise playful and active, you need not worry. But if the child grows lethargic you will have to take the child to a doctor without delay.
