Hi,I am Dr. Santosh Kondekar (Pediatrician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi, I have an eight year old and a 6 year old. My eight year old was diagnosed with strep throat two weeks ago. She took her medication and still 8 days later was sick with a fever. Shortly after her sister came down with a fever also. They both have been running high and low fevers everyday for the past week. I have brought them to the doctors and the hospital twice. All I keep hearing is it is a viral infection...this seems much worse. I am confused on what to do. Can someone please give me advice.
I understand your concerns but it is unlikely for a viral infection to last that long. this is most probably complicated with a super added bacterial infection which requires an antibiotic treatment. Antibiotic treatment requires careful adjustment of the dose according to the weight of each of the children in order to be effective. Wrong dose can lead to persistence of the symptoms. In the meanwhile you can reduce the fever by acetaminophen or ibuprofen syrup every eight hours. For the runny nose you can give then an antihistaminic as citrizine once daily before going to bed.
Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.
