Hello,

You have a very good doubt. Getting fever after oral polio vaccine is a very good sign. It shows that your baby has a very good immune system. Oral polio vaccine has a mixture of live attenuated viruses, against 3 common strains of polio viruses. The intake of vaccine causes a local immune response in the intestine as well as an immune response in the blood. This immune response (body make antibodies against these viruses and kill them) will make memory cells which will kill the viruses if there is a second attack by the virus.

The immune response in the body is responsible for the fever. Paracetamol syrup is only needed for the fever. Fever subsides in next 2 days, if fever continues beyond that consult a pediatrician. Continue breastfeeding.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Meera Rajeev
