What Causes Fatigue, Stomach Pain And Abdominal Gas?

Hi, I m a 64 yr old woman. I am in remission from UC. My symptoms began about a week ago with fatigue. Then I had very bad stomach pain and gas. Saw the GI, she prescribed Canasa. We thought it was a flare. Then Thurs, had diarrhea with blood, but only about twice. I started Asocol. But the pain and muscle aches increased to be extremely painful. Low grade fever. Had blood test and stool samples taken on Fri and Sat for C-diff and other bad intestinal diseases. now waiting for results. Does this sound like C-diff?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello,

I read your message carefully and understood your medical concerns.

Let me recapitalize your medical information:

- 64 years old woman
- symptoms start a week ago: fatigue, stomach pain, and gas.
- drug: Canasa
- bloody diarrhea
- drug: Asacol
- muscle pains
- low grade fever
- tests: blood and stool; waiting for results to be in

Asacol is a drug used to treat symptoms of ulcerative colitis in your case to stop diarrhea. This drug may cause stomach discomfort and gas but you had these symptoms before starting the drug.

Mesalamine and Canasa are the brand names of the same drug - Mesalamine. Canasa drug may cause bloody stools as side effect but this is something that needs to be determined by further investigation.

I think you must be patient and wait for the answers of blood and stool tests.

Clostridium difficile may cause some of these symptoms for sure.

Muscle pain and low grade fever also need to determine if they are due to the drugs your have taken or because of any infection.

The first symptoms (stomach pain, gas and fatigue) can be be due to hypocalcemia and anaemia. It would be great if you mention to us the other medical conditions or diseases you may have.

First symptoms may have another cause then agraviate because of the drugs. Or the other option is that the drugs you have taken have no adverce effects on you and all the symptoms are because of any gastrointestinal infections or other causes.

I advice you to be patient to wait for tests answers and colloborate with your doctor for further tests.

I hope my reply was helpful for you.
