What Causes Fatigue And Sleepiness After Taking Valium For Bladder Spasms?

My husband was given Valium for bladder spasm taken q6 hrs. After a week he seems confused and very sleepy. He is 67 yrs old and has numerous medical problems and takes many meds including Keppra. Can this be a side effect and if so how long does Valium stay in your system. He is paralyzed on his left side from 2 strokes.

Thank you for asking on HCM!

Yes, Valium (diazepam) causes confusion, fatigue and sleepiness, so please see a doctor if this symptoms persist.

Do not stop using diazepam suddenly, or your husband could have increased seizures or unpleasant withdrawal symptoms, so start by cutting your husband's prescription by 10 percent every three to five days.

The sedative effects of Valium may last longer in older adults. Valium can stay a minimum of 3-4 weeks and even may take few months to get completely cleared off the system.
