What Causes Facial Pain?

I started having facial pain last night. It seems to start at or around the bottom of my right ear and goes across my face to my nose. The bottom of my face hurt too, and it was so bad I had to sleep with a heating pad on my face. The pain is not there this morning, but it hurts to swallow and talk. What could be my problem?

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Thanks for posting your query on HCM!
I appreciate your concern for the facial pain.
Age and gender not mentioned.
I am of the opinion that you painful nerves on the face known as Trigeminal neuralgia.
Trigeminal neuralgia is a chronic pain condition that affects the trigeminal nerve, which carries sensation from your face to your brain.

A variety of triggers may aggravate the pain of trigeminal neuralgia, like
shaving, stroking your face, eating, brushing your teeth, talking, putting on makeup encountering a breeze , smiling or washing your face.

Consult your neurologist for proper assessment including investigations like nerve conduction, MRI to rule out any underlying neurological conditions like Multiple sclerosis, or brain tumor pressing on the nerves.
Usually drugs like Carbamazepine with or with Gabapentin or Baclofen are found to be effective in the treatment of trigeminal neuralgia.

I hope your query has been answered up to your expectations.
Regards!
