What Causes Eye Pain During Severe Cough?

My 13 year old son is recovering from a bad cough since Friday Nov 16. He has been taking Coactifed and Symbicort since Wednesday Nov 21. Today he started complaining of pain in his left eye when he coughs so I gave him Ran-Cefprozil 500mg prescribed in case his symptoms worsened. I am worried. Should I be worried?

Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

The pain in eyes has many causes, one of them being a severe cough. This is due to the raised pressure/stress to the eye and its muscles while coughing.

To have investigations done (CBC, sputum test, x-ray chest), pinpoint the cause, and have specific treatment with expert consultation is the way to treat the cause. Cough mixture with diphenhydraminel/codeine will give symptomatic relief till then.

To have a complete ophthalmic check-up (for infection/abrasion/refractory error/glaucoma) is also worth to exclude any problems that may produce pain.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Vasudha Jayant Athavale
