What Causes Excessive Weight Gain When Diagnosed With Hyperthyroidism?

My son was just diagnosed with Hyperthyroidism. He had blood work and thyroid imaging test. I m confused because he is extremely overweight and what I read is that people loose weight with an overactive thyroid. He is also on a Haldol shot once a month for his schizophrenia. He is 42 years old and I didn t get to go into the doctor with him and ask questions. Why would he be so overweight if he has an overactive thyroid?

HI, thanks for using healthcare magic

You are correct in stating that persons with hyperthyroidism is most usually associated with weight loss not gain.

On the other hand haldol is associated with weight gain like some other psychiatric medication.
This means that it is possible that the effect of the haldol is reducing or cancelling out this effect of the hyperthyroidism.

This is only a possibility but if you can at a later point, you can discuss with your doctor.

I hope this helps
