Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
My 96 year old mother has had excessive thick saliva for over a year. It bothers her while eating and talking. She was diagnosed with parkinsins (sp?) about 5 years ago but it is well managed with medication. I have read that this can cause sialorrhea. She lives alone, fixes her own meals and is mentally sharp though a little fragile. She has consulted several doctors, her internist and an ENT specialist, but their only answer is allergy medication which seems to have no effect. I ve read about adding green chillies or ginger to her tea. It seems that most medications that could be prescribed have strong side effects. Any suggestions.
hello and thanks for consulting HCM. This is often caused by inadequate hydration. In addition, many medications can have anticholinergic side effects which can cause dry mouth and thickened secretions. First of all make sure that she is drinking enough water. At least 2 liters daily. She should also avoid all tea, coffee and other beverages with caffeine and they can make dehydration worse. There are swabs that can be used to increase moisture in the mouth as well. If all this does not work then there are several brands of artificial saliva (like Biotine) that she can use to ease the problem. The ginger you suggested may also be helpful, just make sure her tea is a decaffeinated type.
