There can be several causes to excessive sleep. One possibility is sleep apnea, collapsing of the airways during sleep, leading to low quality, disrupted sleep. As a result patients are sleepy and tired during the day. It is more common in overweight people. It is investigated through a test called polysomnography.
Other causes may be hormonal ones like hypothyroidism, anemia or metabolic alterations, which can be screened for with some routine blood tests.
I hope to have been of help.
