What Causes Excessive Sleepiness?

MY WIFE SLEEPS MUCH THAN THE NORMAL PERSON. SHE CAN SLEEP ALL NIGHT AND THEN FALL ASLEEP IN HER RECLINER AND SLEEP ANOTHER TWO TO FOUR HOURS. SHE IS 78, SLIGHTLY OVER-WEIGHT AND TAKES MEDS FOR HIGH BLOOD PRESSURE. ALSO, SHE DOES NOT LIKE EXERCISE. BERT IN SC

I read your question carefully and I understand your concern.

There can be several causes to excessive sleep. One possibility is sleep apnea, collapsing of the airways during sleep, leading to low quality, disrupted sleep. As a result patients are sleepy and tired during the day. It is more common in overweight people. It is investigated through a test called polysomnography.

Other causes may be hormonal ones like hypothyroidism, anemia or metabolic alterations, which can be screened for with some routine blood tests.
