What Causes Excessive Salivation When Sick?

Every time I get sick, I start having excessive salivation. I am almost constantly swallowing it and that at time leads to a lot of air being swallowed making me feel bloated and having to burp the air back up. This is very annoying when trying to sleep. What can I do to stop it?

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain in case if you get sick due to some infectious conditions like throat infection, common cold and fever, sinusitis, allergic conditions can lead to irritation and stimulation of salivary glands and it can cause hypersalivation or Sialorrhoea..
Other thing is that if there is reduced swallowing tendencies like throat pain or dysphgya during sickness then the discomfort can make you notice everytime you swallow saliva and it can lead to the feeling of excessive salivation which is not actually increased..
In case if the salivation becomes normal after the sickness is relieved then it is not a sign of any underlying disorder and you need not to worry as the hypersalivation is secondary to illness and is not an uncommon finding..
At that time you can brush your teeth 2 to 3 times and gargle with mouthwash as they have mouth drying effect and you will feel better..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
