What Causes Excessive Appetite And Tendency To Fall Asleep?

my dad is hungry about an hour after he has eaten although he has often had seconds and thirds at dinner. He eats very fast. He then falls asleep by 8 p.m. each night and cant keep awake. I am worried he drinkis too much, sometimes a bottle of wine a night. Do you think it is something to do with his thyroid. He does not pee excessively and is not thirsty so I dont believe it is diabetes

Endocrinologist 's  Response
Hello,
I do appreciate your concern regarding to your dad's health.
There are many pathologies giving such symptoms, it could be thyroid, liver problems due to alcoohol consumption ect.
When I see someone like you in my practice, I typically order the following blood tests in addition to a detailed physical examination:

CBC (Complete Blood Count, also known as Hemogram; includes Hemoglobin, WBC and Platelet counts)
Electrolytes (Sodium and Potassium in particular)
HbA1c (Glycosylated Hemoglobin = your last 3 months' glucose average).
Liver function tests (SGOT , SGPT, Albumin, Bilirubin, Alkaline Phosphatase)
Kidney function tests (BUN, Creatinine)
TSH (checks your thyroid)
Free T4 (this too checks your thyroid)
25 hydroxy Vitamin D levels (ideal range 40 to 60 ng/ml = 100 to 150 nmol/liter)
Calcium
