What Causes Episodes Of Campylobacter, Diarrhea And Sickness?

Hi there, I have had two episodes of campylorbacter in the last two years and numerous small episodes of diahrroea and sickness. Someone has mentioned to me that this may have been agrovated by taking omeprazole which i have been taking for a few years now for acid reflux. Is this right???

hello there,
The acid in your stomach acts as a barrier which prevents bacteria from entering your GI tract. Since omeprazole is a strong acid reducing agent we prescribe it only for small durations. If you are having it over extended periods then the stomach does not produce adequate acid that can neutralise bacteria. Hence you have a higher predisposition for infections. Also campylobacter is seen more in individuals having meat that may not be sterile. So be careful what you eat .

Hope this helps,
Dr Arun A
