What Causes Enlargement And Throbbing Of The Vein At The Neck?

My son is 16, 5'11" 150 with a history of an appendectomy with complications - ruptured, infected, pic line with drip to area around heart to ward infection - 6 years ago. The last two times he's done push ups for cross country practice, the vein on his neck has enlarged and throbbed and then he ends up with pain to the side but base of the scull. Any thoughts?

Hi, the swelling in the neck must be due to the obstruction in the vein leading to the heart from the neck on that side. which is due to the PICC line placed 6 years back. If I was to manage your son I would advice a Color Doppler test of the veins of his neck and his central veins. This will tell me whether there is any obstruction or stenosis in the venous drainage of his head and neck. It will be fine and is nothing serious so do not worry.
