What Causes Elevation In Heart Rate While Lying Down?

When I lie down in bed at night I notice my heart racing. This happens maybe 3-5 nights in a week. Also, I notice when I take a hot bath, my heart beats faster. Two days ago, I was leaving work in a hurry and kind of running because I wanted to get in front of the school buses before they lined up, and I didn t want to be late to my appointment. When I got into my car, my heart was pounding, and it took a few minutes to level off. Right now, sitting at my desk, I feel a little stressed because we are hosting a music contest at my school, and I am in charge of keeping accurate results paperwork going during the duration of the contest. I can feel my heart beating a little harder than usual. I don t know if I should be worried about something more dangerous than anxiety.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi.

Increase in heart rate with physical activity, contact with warm water, etc; are all normal occurrences and should not be a cause for concern. But if it is palpitations that you are experiencing, I would recommend both an ECG and a 2D echocardiography to look into possible arrhythmias to be the cause. Please visit a general physician or a cardiologist.

Best wishes.
