What Causes Elevated Triglyceride Levels?

I have high triglycerides. My cholesterol medicine (generic version of Lipitor) has helped both good and bad cholesterol, but the tri is still to high. I started taking ten, 1000mg of omega-3 fish oil pills daily, as the three a day I was previously taking wasn t lowering the tri s. Is this safe? *****

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hi,

I understand your concern.

In order to reduce high triglycerides, the very first thing is to see what causes them to stay this high:
- foods you eat?
- any medication you take on daily basis?
- being overweight?
- lack of physical activity?

The management consists of :
- treating the underlying (main) cause
- meds
- supplements
, however, this depends on the levels of triglycerides (TG). So, if you have any lab report, please send to me to evaluate the TG levels myself.

If they will be very high, then, meds like fenofibrate are recommended.
Additional supplements consists of omega-3 fish oil, soy protein, psyllium, Coenzyme Q10, garlic, red yeast rice, policosanol, niacin.

So, you are taking only omega-3 fish oil, I'd recommend to select a supplements with the other natural TG reducers.

Hope this helps.
