Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
What Causes Elevated Creatinine Level While On Metformin?
I have Type 2 diabetes and after a routine checkup this week, my doctor called and took me off of Metformin because my creatinine level was high? I ve not had this problem before, or my other doctor (previous) was not checking this. This blood test was after fasting.
Hello I have gone through your question and understand your concerns. Metformin is commonest, effective and safe drug of choice for patients with newly diagnosed type 2 diabetes. It is always better to undergo both fasting and post lunch blood sugars tested to understand the blood glucose levels in association with food intake. Apart from using the prescribed medication, lifestyle modifications are necessary part of treatment. Raised serum creatinine levels put on view the ongoing kidney damaged that is diabetic nephropathy. Diabetes is one of the major cause of renal failure, hence it is very crucial for all diabetic patients to monitor kidney function along with blood glucose levels. Talk to your treating doctor regarding kidney status and need of further testing for kidney function apart from creatinine levels. Hope your concern is answered. Thank you.
