What Causes Elevated Blood Pressure?

My blood pressure is very erratic. it peaked today at 172/110/ 2nd attempt 3 hours later it is down to 161/109. I have been logging BP, but skipped for awhile and was away for a week. There is a lot of stress/pressure now as someone is dying in family. Thank you, Corinne

Hello, It is very difficult to pin point why blood pressure goes up. Stress and tension does increase the pressure. But essential hypertension can occur in many persons, with no specific reason being identified. Many causes can be responsible like being over weight, stressed, family history of hypertension, being inactive (no physical exercises), excess salt intake and indulgence in smoking and alcohol. Whatever may be the reason it is essential to get it treated and bring it around 130 / 80 mm of Hg. Thanks
