What Causes Ear Pain?

Had ear pain for over a week along with a cold. First little pain but also couldn t hear out of my right ear. Runny nose, awful sounding chest cough have also lasted a week and have gotten somewhat better. My room mate has been pouring vinegar in my ears 4 our of 7 days, no prior ear wax would come out until she did this. After 3rd time nothing came out. I still felt muffled in my ears and painful popping. Tonight she does the vinegar again and this time it was painful in my left ear which hurt first a week ago. Looked like a dab of blood on Kleenex but she used Q Tip ( I know bad to use) nothing came out. Maybe its just raw inside and need to take a break but I need to know if this could be an ear infection or just something that will go away? Thank you.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello

Welcome in H.C.M.

I have gone through your query regarding ear ache for last 7 days. Though you are also having sore throat ,running nose and headache.

According to your symptoms it appears as you are suffering from acute upper respiratory tract infection with acute otitis media. This all happens because of your untreated cold and sore throat. Your throat infection and runninig nose had blocked the opening of eustachian tube (tubular connection between ear and throat), this eustachian tube dysfunction had developed negative pressure in your ear which you felt as bloked ear with hearing loss, further this lead to collection of fluid in your middle ear and now you are having severe pain in your ear.

In such situation putting vinegar in ear will harm you so please don't put any thing in your ear and take-

1- Tab Paracetamol.

2- Steam inhalation.

3- Anti inflammatory.

4- Anti histaminic & decongestant.

5- Antibiotic (preferably broad spectrum).

Probably above will help you otherwise consultation with ENT specialist will become necessary for further treatment.

Regards.
