Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
my Dr prescribed Triamterene/Hctz 1 cap 37.5/25 per day for me maybe 6+ months ago. I have been taking it without side effect. Two weeks ago I awoke with a dry mouth and haven't been able to detect the cause. It has gotten worse with time. Started on left lower section of mouth now advanced. Could this be a side effect? I am otherwise healthy and was prescribed the above for water retention
Triamterene is a diuretic drug and dry mouth is a common side effect of diuretics.. So if you are on a continuous dose of diuretic then it can be a side effect of the same.. Yes, it is a side effect only.. So my suggestion is to consult your physician and discuss with him the side effects.. He can either reduce the dose or advise some alternates which can eventually reduce the side effects and make you feel better.. As of now you can follow the following remedies to reduce dryness in mouth like chew sugarfree chewing gum, use artificial saliva drops and mouth gels like Oralbase, and gargle with special methylcellulose containing mouthwash like Biotene..
Hope this helps..
Regards.
