What Causes Dry Mouth And Difficulty In Swallowing?

I have developed dry mouth (daytime & nighttime) x 1 1/2 mo. No new meds (Elavil at bedtime for sleep x 8 years); not on any antihistamines. Other symptoms: intermittent difficulty swallowing for several years now, chronic constipation most of my life, vaginal dryness (post-menop.; 64 yrs. old), dry skin on toes, dental caries past several years ( Family history: 1 brother is borderline diabetic.) Is there any harm in waiting until June to get checked out? Besides possibly diabetes or possibly Sjogren's, are there any other diseases that cause similar symptoms?

Sorry.....did not realize this was a Pay For Answer website. I'll see my PCP....thank you!!

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concerns..

As per your complain dry mouth and difficulty in swallowing that is probably due to dryness in mouth and throat can be due to causes like:
-Severe dehydration,
-Side effects of medications if you take any.
-Salivary gland dysfunction.
-Nerve damage supplying salivary glands.
-Oral infections like thrush..
-Sjogren's Syndrome..etc..

Increased incidence of tooth decay also occurs due to reduced cleaning inside mouth due to reduced saliva flow that is responsible to continuously flush off debris from teeth with flow of saliva..

The symptoms most probably points towards Sjogrens syndrome as it reduces glandular secretions of the body and all your symptoms looks similar to Sjogrens..

Consult an Immunologist and get a thorough examination done..

As of now:
-For dry mouth chew sugarfree chewing gums..
-Drink plenty of water.
-Avoid regular mouthwash and use specialized mouthwash that are formulated for dry mouth patients like Biotene..
-You can also instil artificial saliva drops..
-Suck tart candies as it also stimulates saliva flow..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
