What Causes Dry Eyes, Nostrils, Throat And Mouth?

I have extremely dry eyes, dry nostrils and extremely dry mouth. My dry throat hurts and I loose my voice quite often. My doctor has run several blood tests but everything comes back negative. Any ideas what to look for next? This has been going on for about 6 months. I get an antibiotic and steroid and that helps for awhile but it returns and is just a little bit worse each time. Something s going on but we can t seem to get ahold of it. Any ideas?

Brief answer: SJOGREN'S SYNDROME..

Hi..
Can understand your concern..

As per your complain and explanation of the symptoms it seems that you are suffering from sjogrens syndrome in which the symptoms of DRY MOTH AND DRY EYES are the hallmark features..

There can also be seen dryness of other mucous membranes as you have dryness of nose and throat..

It is an autoimmune disease in which the patient's body's immune system acts against the body and cause damage to different organs leading to symptoms..

Sjogren's syndrome can be investigated by various symptoms like for dry eyes are Schimer test and Rose Bengal Dye Test or Ocular Dye Test.

For dry mouth Contrast Sialography , biopsy of major salivary glands can be done where the biopsy may show presence of inflammatory cells.

Blood test to look for antibodies against anti-SSA and anti- SSB antigen

Treatment can be planned once the diagnosis is confirmed..

For dryness of mouth Artificial saliva agents available can be used..
Saliva stimulants like sour candies and sugar free chewing gum can help..
Drinking frequently cold water can be relieving..

Several over-the-counter salivary substitutes are available as lozenges, rinses, sprays etc . They contain carboxy-methylcellulose, mucin, or glycerine, which help lubricate the oral mucosa.

Maintain oral hygeine to prevent the risk of dental caries. For this Xylitol containing chewing gums can help..

For dry eyes artificial tear drops are available which can be instilled in eyes to provide relief..
Now a days to induce tears Pilocarpine oral medication is also advised..

You can use a room humidifier for dry nose..

Try to avoid dry air directly entering the nose..

Prefer humid areas..

As the pilocarpine will increase tear flow tear discharge through nose that normally happens will increase and can provide some relief..

Hope the information helps..
