What Causes Drowsiness And Night Mares During Sleep?

Hi doctors, I am 22 years old, I have been having night mares every night for a few weeks now, it's getting harder and harder everyday to get out of bed even if I do get 8hrs of sleep, and I am always tired and sleepy during the day. Is there something wrong with me?

When it comes to sleep, often nightmares are the brain's manifestation of anxiety or stress in your life. Besides that, you could be tired during the day because of the quality of sleep not the quantity. There are many reasons sleep can be interrupted, for example sleep apnea or periodic limb movement disorder.

Often, anxious people have something called alpha intrusion sleep, where wakefulness invades the sleep patterns and can result in fatigue during the day no matter how much you sleep. One treatment for this is low dose trazodone.

Other things can cause poor quality sleep like certain medicines, caffeine, or alcohol for example.

You should discuss this with a physician who can order a polysomnogram or a sleep study.
