What Causes Double Vision In Diabetic?

My husband has developed double vision. If he closes one eye or the other, he can see clearly but when he opens both eyes at the same time, that is when double vision occurs. He can read up close with his glasses and no double vision. They suspected thyroid which was a slight problem and is now medicated with no change. He has type 2 diabetes which resulted in oral medication being doubled but in looking up the medication - could cause blurred vision but does not mention double vision. He will see a specialist on Wednesday but I have been trying to rule out other possibilities. Thank you
