What Causes Dizziness And Painful Ear Post Ear Wax Removal?

Hello Doctor: I had my right ear syringed for wax yesterday, it began to feel uncomfortable/hurt a little and I felt a bit dizzy, so the nurse stopped the procedure. She said she d managed to get quite a lot of the wax out, but not all of it - she recommended I continue with olive oil drops for another week, then we can try again. She says the residual wax is close to my eardrum. I m concerned that the second procedure may cause ear damage. I have had syringing done before a few years ago, and it didn t feel like that last time. My hearing has improved since yesterday and there is no sign of infection at the moment. Should I consult my doctor first and have her look at my ear before going ahead? I am aware of the risks of syringing. Just to let you know, I have had low-grade tinnitus for some years - I had an audiology consult when it presented originally, it doesn t bother me generally.

ENT Specialist 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.

I have reviewed your query and here is my advice. Dizziness, pain and tinnitus are common with syringing. Consult with the doctor and get treated. Continue olive oil drops. Anti inflammatory medicines like paracetamol + diclofenac combination drugs 2 times a day can be used for pain.

Hope my answers have helped you. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Deepashree
