What Causes Dizziness And Gagging?

I m 22 years old I have a fairly healthy diet, But I have been gagging when I eat sometimes causing me to throw up and constantly bringing up an acid like substances which is uncomfortable on my throat I have had these problems a while and believe that my lack of eating because of this is why I blacked out 3 times in one day, during the first black out I came down the stairs and now have a broken leg, I informed the hospital when I went in with my broken leg that I blacked out and was given an appointment at the black out clinic but I couldn t get myself to go so cancelled, but I have since then done this again and I m feeling dizy a lot. I m scared to go to my doctors and have put off going as I m worried this is something serious but I no longer feel like I can carry on without a doctors help? is there something I should try first or do I need to see my GP? Many thanks, Kerri Shore

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello dear,

The symptoms suggest that you might be having Gastro esophageal reflux disease, which is caused by the reflux of acid from stomach to esophagus due to relaxation of the sphincter at the lower part of esophagus.

Management consists of:
1. Lifestyle modification- like weight reduction, sleeping on the left side, or with upper body raised.
2. Dietary modification- avoid consuming irritating substances such as acidic & rich foods, caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
3. Medical management- Proton pump inhibitors like Omeprazole, Pantoprazole (which prevent acid formation in stomach)+ Domperidone preparations (strengthens the sphincter & prevents reflux)

So, it will be better to consult your GP/ Gastroenterologist.
Investigation like Ultrasound scan of abdomen & Upper GI endoscopy will be helpful in clinching the diagnosis.

Wish you a good health.
Take care.
