What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing Food And Medicine?

I have been helping to care for my grandmother who has recently had an emergency hip replacement following a fall. She is 94 years old and has had trouble eating solids for quite a while which we had thought was due to her dentures which she doesn't want to get any help for. However, it would seem that in addition to denture problems, any food she is swallowing is getting stuck part way down her throat and she is now getting this problem with liquids also. She thinks it has gone down then she brings it back up along with a lot of mucus. It has only been during the last 24 hours that she hasn't been able to keep anything down which will mean she can't take her medication either. Any ideas what the problem might be??

It sounds like she is having a esophageal blockage. I is very important for her to see a gastroenterologist to get an endoscopy of her esophagus. Sometimes they can stretch the esophagus when they do the procedure.
