What Causes Difficulty In Swallowing After A Tonsillectomy?

I had a tonsillectomy 5 days ago (I m 18) and I haven t had very much pain as I m staying on top of my medication. However, today I started having difficulty swallowing and my mouth has been drying out very quickly. It seems to me that there is more mucus build up than usual and I have to spit it out about every 5 minutes. I was wondering if there was any way to eliminate or even decrease the amount of mucus that s sitting at the back of my throats and on the roof of my mouth.

Hi..
Welcome to HEALTHCARE MAGIC..

I have gone through your query and can understand your concern.

As per your complain and presentation of symptoms excessive mucous production after tonsillectomy is not an abnormal finding as it is due to irritation, inflammation and swelling at the surgical site..
The more mucous production is also felt when there is difficulty in swallowing and the patient feels that there is excess production..
But in case if after 5 days the mucous secretion is increased and swallowing is difficult or painful then it can be due to infection at the Tonsillectomy site..

Consult your treating surgeon and get evaluated..
You can be advised a course of antibiotics, anti-inflammatory painkiller like Ibuprofen for reducing pain and inflammation.
Doing warm saline gargles and antiseptic mouthwash gargles can help..
Keep well hydrated by taking ample of water.
Take a soft and cool diet..

The surgeon can also use a suction machine to remove excess mucous from throat..

Hope this information helps..

Thanks and regards.
