What Causes Difficulty Breathing After Walking?

I am 54. healthy. walk many miles a day. noticed hard to take deep breath a few days ago when walking uphill. next day sternum began to hurt, and hurt to touch. no fever, no cough. a lot fatigue. 2 days ago. palpitations. no tachycardia. 2 wks ago got a varicella booster. antiinflammatories help with the pain but the palpitations concern me. no caffeine or meds. im an RN. had heart check up 2 yrs ago.all good. how long do i wait until seeing my MD re: the palpitations? d.

Hello dear, thanks for your question on HCM.
I can understand your situation and problem.
In my opinion you should consult cardiologist and get done
1. ECG
2. 2d echo
3. Stress test (trade mill test)
To rule out cardiac cause.
There is high possibility of cardiac cause in your case , so we need to rule out this first.
You are having palpitations, breathlessness on exertion (uphill walking) and age more than 50, all these favour cardiac cause more.
So get done above mentioned investigations first and rule out cardiac cause.
So consult cardiologist and discuss all these.
