Hi,I am Dr. Shanthi.E (General & Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
I am pretty sure I have medication constipation. I have tried fiber, vegetables, OTC laxatives and nothing helps. I drink water all day long. I go 2-3 weeks of not passing fecal matter then, once I go, I have very loose stools for 3-4 days. Then it goes back to being constipated again. What would you recommend for this?
I read your message and understood your medical problem.
You think that constipation is medically induced. Can you please name to me all the drugs you take or have been taking?
Recurrent changes in bowel habits like frequent constipation followed by diarrhea episodes are typical for the irritated bowel syndrome (IBS). It is usually followed by other symptoms like bloating, belly pain and cramps.
On the other hand, there is a huge number of drugs and other conditions that may cause episodes of diarrhea and constipation. The fact that diet and even laxatives are not very useful makes me think more about IBS. The main thing in this disease is that you must identify the triggers and avoid them.
It may be a trouble of nutrition or food intolerance. A trouble inside the bowel like polyps and other types of lesions may cause changes in bowel habits. To identify the exact cause you need to see a gastro- hepatologist and do some examinations like abdominal X-Ray and colonoscopy.
Hope this was helpful for you.
