Hi,I am Dr. Subhankar Chakraborty (Gastroenterologist). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hello, my name is Elle. My mother has diarrhea off and on and has had colonoscopies. Everything comes out normal. We mentioned it to her primary physician, but doesn't really address it. I bought her some probiotics to take because last year she was on and off of antibiotics and I am just learning about the benefits. I bought her the probiotics that contain Lactobacillus and acidophilus of 100 million organisms. She took them for the first time last night and had a really bad episode of diarrhea that was yellow with a foul odor. She said it was the first time she experienced that. I thought maybe cutting the probiotic in half for her system to adjust to it. I don't know what the cause for her diarrhea is I am just trying to help her. She is not loosing weight. Her appetite is good. She is a diabetic and does have hypertension. She was diagnosed with diverticulosis last year, but the gastroenterologist did not address her diarrhea issue either. What else can she do to resolve this? Thank you very much.

What Causes Diarrhea After Taking Probiotics?
Hi, Thanks for writing your query. After reading your post, I would like to advise that you should continue with the probiotics. This will help in controlling the symptoms. The cause of loose motions can be either due to antibiotics or due to infection of the gastrointestinal tract. You should get yourself clinically examined and investigated. Examination of the stool will help in knowing the cause of loose motions. If infection is the cause, antibiotic and antiamoebic will be helpful. She should be given light meals prepared under hygienic conditions. Also take care of hydration. I hope this is helpful to you. Thanks.
