What Causes Diarrhea After Taking Sodium Sulfacetamide?

I cannot take any type of antibiotics due to having a severe case of C-Diff. A Dermatologist prescribed Sodium Sulfacetamide &Sulfar wash. I having been having diarrhea non stop for two days now. Is it possible this is causing my diarrhea, and may have started up the C-diff again? I am alittle worried, because I cannot handle having C-Diff again. I spent a few months in the hospital from having it before. Horrible thing to have. Thank you for your time Patty

Hello,

I understand your concern but I think there is not the case to worry so much.

The medications your dermatologist has prescribed (Sodium Sulfacetamide and sulfar wash) you are intended for topical use. From what you are description, I guess you have acne troubles.

Topical use does not allow these drugs to create systemic side effects because they are made not to be very capable to enter blood. Furthermore, they won't cause troubles in your gut.

So, I don't think your diarrhea is because c-diff neither. If I was your caring doctor would advise to run further tests to determine the cause of diarrhea such as:
- examination of stool for ova/parasites
- culture of stool for candida or pathological bacteria.

Take probiotics to stabilize intestinal flora, increase water intake with ORS and be careful with foods/drinks you consume. Take yogurt enriched with probiotics, tasectan/pepto bismuth for diarrhea. Eating a hard-boiled egg oregano can help.

Avoid kiwi, or foods/meat not well simmered.
Wish fast recovery.
