What Causes Diarrhea After Giving Paracetamol And Bronchial Mucolytic Syrup?

My baby is having dierhea since last 2 days. She is also couging frequently with a barking sound and occasional saliva. She is not feeding well and vomiting while coughing if she has been recently fed. Her initial sign was a fever (around 38.8 C) after which she was taken to a doctor and was diagnosed with a tonsil infection and given a strong dose of antibiotic along with paracetamol and bronchial-mucolytic-syrup. However just two days after her medication she started to have dierhea. Her fever had reduced though but she also developed some minor rashes and occasional dry coughing. Now she s refusing to drink or eat. We are trying to give ORS solution along with formula but seems like her intake is not enough. She is just about to be 1 year old this month. She has otherwise been nursing well with milk but is not very keen on solids yet. We have also seen another doctor who adviced to stop the antibiotic immediately considering the diehrea being it s side effect and has given us domperidom and ORS solution. Please kindly advice.

Pathologist and Microbiologist 's  Response
Hello and welcome to HCM,
Fever with barking sound like cough is suggestive of infection of lower respiratory tract.
In addition, your observed that tonsils are also enlarged and inflamed.
Antibiotic is definitely indicated in this condition, however, a pro-biotic should also been added to prevent diarrhea as side effect.
In addition, the mucolytic is also prescribed rightly as it will clear the secretions collected in the respiratory tract.
With the onset of diarrhea, the antibiotic has to be stopped immediately which your doctor has already stopped.
Domperidon will halt the diarrhea and ORS solution will compensate the water and electrolyte losses which have occured due to diarrhea.
Development of rash could also be due to side effect of antibiotic.
Dry cough if still persisting required a cough suppresant which is different from antibiotic.
I suggest you to see your pediatrician for clinical assessment of the rash and prescription of cough suppressant.

Thanks and take care
