Hi,I am Dr. Andrew Rynne (Family Physician). I will be looking into your question and guiding you through the process. Please write your question below.
Hi My Mom is 90 years old and on many medications with high sugar count that the Dr. does not want to give medication because of all other medications. I have asked my sister not to give her any wine when she is with her as my mother has dementia and is forgetting to take her walker and has fallen many times. Please tell me if I am right or wrong as I am the principle care giver.
You are correct in not wanting your mother to have wine. Alcohol can interact with all sorts of medicines and cause problems. Fall risk is increased, especially in elderly people who already are at risk. Alcohol is damaging to the brain, and can aggravate the dementia. It's also not good when the blood sugars are high. There are many good reasons for her to avoid wine and other kinds of alcohol. Hope this helps.
