What Causes Dark Colored Stools In A Person With Elongated Colon?

I am 83 years old and have an elongated colon with extra bends. My gastorentomologist has told me that any possible side-effects from milk of magnesia are better than being constipated. I have had regular long colonoscopies for some time. Should I worry about darkening of my stools?

Hi, happy to help you on your health concern on part of HCM!

In the present case of dark stools, if I were your consulting physician, I would just think of some recurrent upper G.I or stomach bleeding and go for a stool occult blood/ microscopic examination!

As per your description, there could be some bleeding from a gastric / duodenal ulcer which is not controlled by medicines! This could not be some neoplastic condition too!...

THEREFORE please get UPPER G.I ENDOSCOPY for this reason and revert back to us.

Hope you got your answer. Please feel free to write to us if any more queries.

Wishing you the best health!
