What Causes Dark Brown Spotting In 6 Weeks Pregnancy?

I have taken 2 at home pregnancy tests, both positive. I am around 5 to 6 weeks pregnant. Since Sunday I have been spotting dark brown/almost black, only when i use the restroom and wipe. No major cramps or pain, no fever. It does seem to get better when i stay off of my feet, and the more active I am , the more there seems to be of the spotting. Age - 35, height 5 4 , weight 160

Hello dear, I understand your concern. In my opinion the spotting during pregnancy might be due to hormonal abnormalities like progesterone insufficiency, thyroid abnormalities and cervical bleeding or any excess physical strain etc.So i suggest you to get an ultrasound done to know the status of pregnancy.Take adequate rest.Avoid physical strain and intercourse.

OBGYN Dr. Nishikant Shrotri's  Response
Hallow Dear,

I must compliment you for your very short but precise history.

Brown vaginal bleeding is always a bleeding from the uterus. It is old bleeding that remains inside the uterus for some time and then comes out as a brown bleeding. The other source of brown discharge is non-viable tissues like embryo (baby) getting decayed.

During any phase of pregnancy, brown discharge is not a good sign. In most of the cases it is due to non living baby. It can be diagnosed by ultrasonography. At this stage of pregnancy, foetal heart activity and the smooth edges od the sac denote viable pregnancy. Urine pregnancy test may not be conclusive since it requires more than a week for the pregnancy test to become negative after the baby has become non-living.

Please report to your Obstetrician and get the condition diagnosed. In case of non-viable baby, please get the pregnancy terminated immediately lest the risk of clotting disorder (DIC) leading to enormous bleeding, infection and/or kidney failure.

I hope you are satisfied with the advice. if so, you may post 'Useful'.
