What Causes Cramping Pain In Lower Abdomen While Urinating?

For the past few days to maybe a week, I have been having pressure in my lower abdomen and cramping pain in my lower abdomen when I urinate. I have had several bladder infections in the past and it feels different. There is no burning, just the cramping pain, almost like severe menstrual cramps, and when I am done, the pain goes away. My doc is very busy and I can not get in to see her for at least a week. Thank you for your time.

Hi ..

Thanks for writing in...

I understand you feel that this pain is different from your earlier bladder infections.
However, the first possible diagnosis is a urinary tract infection.

Hope your menstrual history is normal and regular.

I would advise you to get a urine routine and cuture sensitivity test done . Based on the report , if it is a urinary tract infection, you might need to take a course of antibiotics.

Do the following measures :
1.Drink at least 8-12 glasses of water a day .
2.Regular periodic emptying of the bladder. Every 3-4 hours empty your bladder.
3.Follow good perineal hygiene, by keeping the area clean and dry. After urinating, wash the area with water and dry it with toilet paper.
4.Wash the perineal region before and after sexual intercourse. At present avoid intercourse till resolution of symptoms/ till your doctor says you are ok.
5. Drinking a glass of cranberry juice might help.
6. Empty your bladder before going to bed. And again empty your bladder 20 minutes later.

Hope my answer was helpful to you.

Do get back to me if you have any further queries.

Regards,
Dr. Divya Kuttikrishnan
