What Causes Cough, Tiredness, Running Nose And Sneezing When Diagnosed With Flu?

Hello, I seen my doctor on Dec 14 and was told I have the flu. Because it s viral it has to run its coarse. I ve had plenty of rest, lost of liquids, and taking over the counter flu medicine. Here it is 10 days later, and I m not feeling any better. I have a constant cough, tired, congested, runny nose, sneezing and at times a headache. I was having chills & a fever too, but that seems to have gone away. Could I possibly have bronchitis at this point? I just want to feel better.

Hi..
Thanks for the query..

The symptoms that you are explaining that are not getting better even after ten days despite taking over the counter cold medications can be due to progression of infection to lower respiratory tract leading to either Bronchitis or Pneumonia..

I would therefore suggest you to consult an ENT Physician or Pulmonologist and get evaluated and he can advise you investigations like Complete blood picture with ESR, IgG levels, chest x ray etc to rule out the cause and treated accordingly..

You can be given a course of antibiotics along with mucolytics like Ambroxol, anti-histamines like Levocetrizine, cugh suppressants like Dextromethorphan, cough expectorant containing Gueifenesin and decongestants like Phenylephrine..
Along with it inhalational bronchodialators can also be advised..
Also drink warm water and other warm fluids..
Avoid spicy foods and also rice, sour foods etc..

Hope this helps..

Regards.
