What Causes Cough, Dry Heaves And Vomiting While Drinking Water After An Appendectomy?

I had my appendix taken out almost 2wks ago. Today I was drinking some water and a little bit went down the wrong pipe. Anyway I was coughing, gagging and vomiting. Now my left side really hurts, not as bad as when I got out of surgery but it s close. What could it possibly be. P.S I don t have extra cash to ask a question here. I ve been out of work for 2wks

Hello,

I understand your concern.

You are reporting to :

- have had appendectomy 2 weeks ago
- cough, gagging and vomiting after drinking water this morning

You explained that while you were drinking water a little bit went down the wrong pipe. You have aspirated some water, which means that a little bit water has passed to the respiratory system (the wrong pipe).

The aspiration of water has caused cough. You got stressed out and started vomiting as a reflex.

All this stress has raised the abdominal pressure and caused you the pain.

So there is nothing to worry. Try not to breathe while you are drinking and stay calm to avoid the aspiration of food in your respiratory system.

The appendix is on the right side, while the pain you are having is on the left side. So, nothing to do with the operation site but only with extra pressure to your abdomen following coughing.

Hope it helped
