Hello, Doc. My husband had a blood clot in his leg which was found last december and treated with Warfarin for 6mo. He is coughing and short of breath and he blacks out when he coughs. This all has suddenly began this past Monday and his cough is worsening. We are going to the ER today and i think the b;lood clot may have traveled to his lungs. does this sound probable?
Thanks for your question on HCM. Yes, this can be a possibility. This is known as pulmonary embolism. The most common cause is DVT (Deep Vein Thrombosis) of larger veins of leg. The thrombus from these vein dislodge and travel through blood and reach heart. From heart they reach the pulmonary artery and stuck in there. Thus they hamper the blod supply of the lung and thus the oxygenation is hampered.so patient is feeling shortness of breath and chest pain. This can also rise pulmonary artery presuure ( Pulmonary Hypertension). Which is irreversible. So better to consult pulmonologist and get done CT pulmonary angiography. Thisis gold standard for pulmonary embolism.
