What Causes Constant Smoke Smell In Nose?

For the past year and maybe a half I have smelt a sort of smoke. I can smell it no matter where I am so I know it's not because I'm in a certain place. It happens a few times, maybe monthly. I am only 16 and I don't know what to do about it. I hate the smell of smoke so it is really unbearable. I have looked up and found something about "phantom smell" that can be a sign of disease. I'm really worried, so I wonder.. Is this anything to really worry about?

Hi Dear,

Welcome to HCM.

Understanding your concern. As per your query you have constant smell of smoke in nose which is due to disturbance in olfactory sensations leading to phantosmia usually known as olfactory hallucination . . It also sometimes occur due to smoking habit , olfactory nerve dysfunction , allergic reaction and infection of sinus also known as sinusitis . I would suggest you to consult ENT specialist for proper diagnosis . Doctor will take history or may order CT scan , blood test and nasal endoscopy . Doctor may prescribe antibiotics ( amoxicillin or penicillin ) along with decongestants and anti inflammatory . Doctor may also refer you to allergy specialist if he /she find thisproblem to be due to allergic reaction . For now take steam , do saline nasal rinses and avoid food like nuts and sea food .

Hope your concern has been resolved.
