What Causes Constant Foul Smelling Loose Stools?
I am a 65 year old woman who has had loose bowels for 2 1/2 years accompanied by very foul odor. The movements are very stringy and oily. I often have gas type pains. I have been taking Culturelle daily for 6 months which has helped but if I forget to take it I have constant secretions and pain. The foul odor seems to be worse. I had a colonoscopy 6 years ago which only showed a benign growth. I also had a test for parasites which came back negative. My weight is stable and I feel fine other wise but these symptoms are becoming more extreme.

Understanding your concern. As per your query your have symptoms of constant foul-smelling loose stools which seems to be due to acute gastroenteritis which is a type of viral infection. It could be due to electrolyte imbalance in body and due to underlying systemic condition. Need not to worry. I would suggest you to take proper rest. You should have plenty of fluids to rehydrate. You should take diet rich in multivitamins. You should do tepid sponging as well. Avoid intake of outside hot and spicy food substances. Visit general physician once and get it examined. You should get blood tests done to find out underlying cause of your condition whether bacterial or viral and start treatment accordingly. You should take diet rich in fibres and proton pump inhibitors. Your symptoms will resolve in 3-5 days.
