What Causes Clogged Ears?

My right ear feels like it is stopped up. I tried cleaning the inside of the canal with a special syringe for impacted wax but it seems to be on the inside of my ear. It stops up real bad when I lay on my right side but it seems to open up when on my left side. It stays stopped up when I m up. Feels like it might be in my sinus cavity next to my ear. I have also tried irrigating my sinuses with no luck.

General & Family Physician 's  Response
Hello and Welcome to ‘Ask A Doctor’ service.
I have reviewed your query and here is my advice.

As per your clinical history is concerned you need a physical examination by an ENT doctor in your area, it looks like you have ET blockage so he may advise you an antihistamine as well as nasal drops which will dry and open the passage. Do a blood differential count.

You can follow few tips which may improve your conditions.
Close your mouth and squeeze your nostrils closed with your fingers, then take a deep breath. Blow air out of your nose to regulate the air pressure. If done correctly, you will hear a slight popping sound which means the Eustachian tubes are open again or you can blow a balloon in 1 nostril by closing other nostril and reverse it.

Hope I have answered your query. Let me know if I can assist you further.

Regards,
Dr. Uday Nath Sahoo
