What Causes Clear Nasal Discharge After Head Injury?

My 8 year old was playing football in the yard and collided with his friend head to head. He got hit right in the temple. About 30 minutes later, he had a clear fluid (which he called water) coming out of his nose. He seems fine and is not complaining of a headache. Should I be concerned?

Hi,
Welcome to healthcare magic.
I had gone through your question.
I can understand your concern.

This could be cerebrospinal fluid leak secondary to trauma.

I recommend the following.
1) Most of the cerebrospinal fluid leaks are self limiting.
2) If it recurres and he gets any symptoms like headache, vomiting, neck stiffness he needs to evaluated.
3) Prophylactic antibiotics to prevent meningitis.
4) Avoid fatty and junk foods.
5) Stool softeners and cough suppressant.

He will be fine.
Hope I have answered your question. If you have any questions, I am happy to help.

Wish you a good health and speedy recovery.

Regards,
