What Causes Chronic Pain In Between The Heel And Toe?

I m a 57 year old woman-5 7 165 lbs and have been having lateral foot pain on my left foot, roughly halfway between mt heel and toe; a bit closer to the heel, for the past couple of weeks. I ve always had flat feet. The area protrudes, and feels like a serious bruise. I commonly sit cross-legged, Indian style, but cannot do so with my left foot on the bottom, I m startled by the pain. My only real exercise is treading water about an hour a day. My mother and aunt have severe RA, diagnosed in their 50 s and 30 s respectively. That prospect terrifies me, but I imagine this is something else. Thoughts? Thank you, Andrea Farenga YYYY@YYYY

General Surgeon 's  Response
The fact that you say the lateral aspect of your left foot looks bruised with some swelling, since two weeks, suggests an inflammation. This s the cause of the pain and discomfort. Most important is to give rest to the foot and minimize ambulation to minimum to help early resolution. You would also need to take a course of antibiotics. It is best tat you consult a Podiatric surgeon or a General surgeon who can examine and rule out an abscess, and advise the appropriate antibiotic. Till complete resolution, it would also help healing if you can keep the foot elevated on a chair while being seated, to reused the swelling.
